Use the comments feature of this blog to post a brief (no more than 100 words) description of what you think a blog is.
Trackback example: This is a link to Professor Lawley's recent weblog entry.
Posted by liz at December 10, 2002 08:20 AM | TrackBackA blog could go one of two ways, IMHO:
1 - A blog could be a professional or intellectual exchange of information that encourages progress & promotes thinking wherever it goes...
2 - ...or a blog could be a personal ball of complaints and/or deep (read that: shallow) thoughts about his or her day.
Posted by: steyblind on December 10, 2002 08:36 AMA blog is a way of communication. A blog enables a user to post thoughts on just about anything and then recieve feedback in the form of comments. It seems to be a good way of posting news, information, and links to resources. It's also a good way to ask questions and get answers and information from other users.
Posted by: ElizaA on December 10, 2002 08:38 AMI see a blog as an updated Message Board. One can post new messages and respond to previous entries, but you can also check to see if your own messages have been referenced in other blogs(traceback). A blog is a better way to communicate on a topic since you have access to the comments being posted on the specific messsge and to other messages in other blogs that have referenced the original message.
Posted by: StephanieM on December 10, 2002 08:38 AMI think a blog is a new way of communicating with exploted roots. What I mean by this is that although the idea of a conference and a blog is kind of a new though it seems to me that the idea originated through things like Chat Rooms and even Instant messanger. With the popularity of instant messanger I think that blogs might catch on, however, they will not be used the same as a messaging service or chat room - I think they will be more strongly tied to work related and special interest fields as a way to post a well though out set of information on a topic and have others respond to your findings with thought and detail. This doesn't seem like a quick fix with streaming comments and unelaborated posts, this seems like it has the potential to be more, and more intelligent.
Posted by: EvanL on December 10, 2002 08:39 AMI think a blog is an advanced use a technology instead of a forum. I belong to a forum and this reminds me just like it. I think a forum makes finding and replying to topics much easier... www.ubrf.org... is the forum i belong too( its about cars) but there are many topics you can go to, and within the topics there are many discussions (ie. car stereo, general automotive...) A blog seems to just have topics, which people can respond to, as they can do in a forum. The thing that sets a blog apart is the trackback feature. All in all I like my forum better still... who knows i could like blogs someday?
Posted by: RyanS on December 10, 2002 08:40 AMIm my opinion a blog seems to be a message board on sterroids. It also has some elements of a community chat that doesn't take place in real-time.
Posted by: Anthony Albarran on December 10, 2002 08:40 AMTo me, a blog is sort of like an online journal combined with a message board. You can post information and recieve feedback. It's kind of like a (livejournal, except that blogs have more features and allow for the comments to show up right on the page along with what they were in response to. Blogs seem to foster an almost community type of discussion forum ranging from personal topics to professional related topics; either way, they are an online form of communication.
Posted by: Molly Miles on December 10, 2002 08:40 AMWhat is a blog?
I think a blog is a method of keeping a journal about what you do, almost like a live journal, and what you've learned and it's a way to share that with the rest of the world.
You can post topics that you are interested in or have a comment on and anyone who reads your blog can post reactions to what you've written and get immediate feedback. Its a form of communication in a way and getting others feedback. It's basically a real-time journal in which you post your thoughts.
A blog is a personalized forum where up-to-the-second information can be posted and distributed to interested consumers. The consumers have the opportunity to respond to this journalized information providing a feedback loop to the author of the post and all blog-followers. A blog is an informative super-journal in that it is a well organized, easily accessible and usefully interactive information-sharing Internet-based tool.
Posted by: Joe Ferner on December 10, 2002 08:40 AMA blog is a forum to pose questions and thoughts and recieve feedback from your peers. Your thoughts are often elaborated on, challenged, or answered in a colaborative manor. This creates a continuous cycle in which you and your peers are involved while information pertaining to your topic develops. The blog creates a sort of network between you and other bloggers giving you access to realtime information.
Posted by: RyanN on December 10, 2002 08:41 AMA Weblog is a conversation tool that allows for users to comment on another users posts. If any students have ever taken an online course here at RIT they have probably taken part in "Weblog-like" conversations via FirstClass. Students will submit an email to the group, and other students respond to the email as if they we're having a conversation, much like Weblogs. However with a Weblog, it expands the audience and participants to virtaully anybody.
Posted by: MattG on December 10, 2002 08:41 AMI suppose that the nature of "what is a blog" depends on how you intend to USE the blog. I visit a variety of websites each day, including quite a few that have already embraced the blog way of updating. A movie score review site, www.cinemusic.net, features a semi-daily blog about current happenings in the world of movie music. However, this particular blog doesn't allow for commenting, trackbacks or linking directly to posts. I don't feel that this is a personal "ball of complaints," but at the same time, it's not furthering discussion on the individual topics posted. LiveJournals, on the other hand, are, IMHO, a fantastic use of blogs. Anyone, anywhere can post anything that they want, from pictures, to movie reviews, to dreams they had the night before, and it's accessible to anyone, and also, as a large already established community, promotes discussion inside and out of one person's blog.
I think a blog is a convienient way of posting to the web, to be accessible to be read by anyone. A blog can then be used however the author chooses to promote it to be used.
What is a blog?
A blog is a medium for discussion, a medium for conversation, and a medium for feedback. By using blogs, communities can form and knowledge can be passed around freely.
People can view, comment, and/or post new topics to discuss. People can read now and then come back later on to comment since everything is stored in an online journal form. In addition, blog entries can be linked to others so that similar information submitted (comments about the same topic and comments that were made with new posts) can be connected, which is also an easy way to keep archives connected to present posts.
Overall, blogs are a good way to get conversation going, a good way for people to voice their opinions, and a good resource for information.

Posted by: ChristineW on December 10, 2002 08:43 AMA blog is an interactive journaling, news posting device. Posting a topic or piece of information on a regular basis draws attention from various places where people want to see what you have to say next. They also want to see who said what about a recent entry and even comment on it them selves. Not all blogs are interactive though. Some are more of just a news source than a forum or discussion board.
Posted by: ErikG on December 10, 2002 08:43 AMBlog can be used for many things. Some quick thoughts on what blog is.
1. A blog can be a way of expressing one's thoughts.
2. Blog can also be a communicating medium for people to share information or thoughts.
Posted by: JenniferO on December 10, 2002 08:44 AMI think blog can anything you want it to be. A journal, an inner monologue, brain fart, open diary, forum, source of news, a way to keep friends and family closer, and/or a very unique personal niche on the www. It's more unique than an individual personal web page, because it allows for community/communial interaction. It can also be used by companys also but I feel it's key market is the individual. 5 key words: Personal, Interactive, Insightful, Dynamic, and Organized.

Posted by: EvanS on December 10, 2002 08:45 AMA blog is an example of a DYNAMIC website, in that it can generate it's content on the fly without the user tediously coding every page. This advantage can very helpful... with one command you can update several webpages on a site automatically with one post (i.e. one blog entry can update the blog's main page, a separate page with the post, and the archive, while also constantly checking back for TrackBacks, current music, and other features.) The only problem is that it can be so easy to update a webpage, you might get really carried away and post something about yourself you might not want everyone to see :) Then again, that could also be the best thing about READING blogs...
Posted by: Brian Emling on December 10, 2002 08:45 AMBefore starting this class, I've always thought of blogs as just like on-line journals, sort of like what www.xanga.com is used for by many people. After reading the articles assigned in class, blogs seem to be like discussion forums, but not as organized. Forums are more organized in that the posts are categorized from general topics to specific topics. I am used to discussions on forums like ones from www.ezboard.com. I'm not used to discussing things on blogs. Maybe I just have to get more familiar with them.
Posted by: VincentL on December 10, 2002 08:45 AMA blog is a forum for discussion. It allows people to communicate, share ideas with others publicly via the web.
Posted by: EamonS on December 10, 2002 08:48 AMWell...
Not having all that much expiriance with blogs, from what i gather and what i've read so far, blogs are a type of online forum on which users voice opinions, link information, share knowledge and expiriance and participate in online community.
I keep thinking sometimes how much i hate email. I know this has little to do with blogs, but the more and more I understand how blogs work, I feel like it is a superior technology. Communication is a big issue/market in the internet world wether it be email / instant messanging / bloging or some other form. This might be the start of a new topic...

Posted by: Greg Peterson on December 10, 2002 08:49 AMA Weblog is a forum in which many users can share there opinions about any given topic and discuss. Information can be shared between users quickly and easily. They may also be used by people to easily have many people update and edit parts of a site through a weblog interface. Weblogs allow an online conversation and freedom of leaving comments about anything being discussed.
