Group Project 1: Design Document (posted 19 January 2004)

Create a design document for your group’s site, using the guidelines provided in the Webmonkey Information Architecture tutorial.

The document should be submitted to my dropbox in myCourses no later than the beginning of class on January 19. A printed copy of the document should be brought to class on that day. Page mock-ups can be included as part of the document (screen shots and diagrams), or you can provide an URL to a web-based mock-up as part of the design document.

I will evaluate these documents based on the following aspects:

  • Quality and comprehensiveness of content (did you include all the things outlined in the tutorial?)
  • Clarity of expression (how well did you express yourself? does it make sense? does it hang together as a cohesive document?)
  • Appropriateness of choices (was your identification of goals, initial design look & feel, etc, well-suited to the site and audience?)

More details on the trip:

Here’s the basic itinerary.

In addition to staying with a family friend in Tokyo, we’ll be making day trips to Kyoto, Kamakura, and Inba (Chiba province).

I have been reading and reviewing the format for the design document and working on some scenarios. I missed a bit of the last class (about 10 minutes in the beginning) and I think I may have missed this piece of information. One of the things I am a bit unsure of is the theme of the website. If someone could clarify this it would be most helpful.

For example:

Is the website supposed to be one of the following, a combination of the following, or possibly all of the following:

- informational only

- a marketing site (i.e. travel agency-like)

- educationally focused

- a virtual travel site

If I could get a clarification on this it will help tremendously.

Happy Holidays,

Bob

Prof. Lawley,

I read through your itinerary in order to gain more insight into the purpose of your trip to Japan, but I don't think I got what I was looking for. Do you have more on your trip posted elsewhere? I recall you speaking about it in class, but I wanted to be sure of the primary purpose for your trip work/liesure.
I went through the design document tutorial and round about the first step it states that we should view the client's mission statement; do you have one, aside from the original assignment? We get that the our site is supposed to inform you of the sites, events, history, etc. going on in the places you are visiting, but I feel we could do this better if we knew things like: whether or not this trip is the first of a series of trips to Japan, will any work/research be going on, are you guys into hi-tech devices and video games, etc. You mentioned that your mother has been to Japan before. When (year) and what parts of Japan?

Thanks,
Chris of sashimi
