Mediated Identity (13 March 2008)

A key component of computer mediated communication is that the participants' identities are themselves mediated. The topic of identity in computer mediated contexts is an important one. We'll discuss issues surrounding mediated identity today.

I found this very recent CNN news article on computer-mediated religious communication... online confessions. I though it was interesting since it is a domain where not much discussion on CMC is done, as opposed to in the workplace and education perhaps due to the sensitive nature of the topic. It provides an example of mediated identity as well since users post their confessions anonymously which prevents embarrassment and provides 'self protection' as we read in Chap 3 of Hiltz and Turoff's "Human Communication via Computer".
