Week 1 Discussion Questions (12 March 2007)
This week I'd like to know why you're taking this class. What are your areas of research interest? What part do you see this class playing in your graduate program?
Post your comments here.
I am taking this class as part of my HCI concentration towards an MS in IT. Most of my interests lie in software usability.
The company I work for does a lot of software development for large groups of people. When making this software, the user is sometimes not involved in the design process. This can eventually lead to cumbersome hard to use software. I see this class playing an integral part of helping me to think from a group's perspective as well as learning about various topics of groupware.

I feel that there is a large opportunity for the quality of learning to be tremendously increased with the effective utilization of technology in and out of the classroom. And once the foundation for learning has been laid this zest for learning will carry throughout later years of education.
Computer-supported cooperative work and groupware is a key element in supporting how children learn. I look forward to exploring existing and forthcoming technologies. I hope that this course will open the door to more possibilities to economical and effective solutions for the classroom.

I have done some research on the topic and I am really interested in the way the military utilizes some of the groupware applications to train it's military personnel. I would like to learn a bit about how the groupware applications are helping out people for the good and not for fun or play. We'll see what I can find out later with my research efforts. As far as how this will fit in my graduate degree, I am not sure yet but I do know that it will assist me with the abilities to communicate better with other countries with regards to development of the products.

Due to an ever-increasing need for a computer/technology-mediated communication in today’s modern professional/governmental/academic environments, I thought that taking this course was an imperative.
My academic interests lie in health communication and policy. I thought that mastering groupware and cscw would help me further understand the interactions between individuals or groups of patients and health professionals (to begin with). Also, I believe that it is essential that I acquaint myself with the program’s newly developed techniques and strategies.
I am enthusiastically looking forward to our online experience.

I do not know very much about the CSCW/Groupware area and would like to gain a firm understanding of the subject and learn how to incorporate CSCW into a corporate environment.
I have worked for the Navy and in the department that I worked they utilized groupware meeting support software. It will be interesting to learn other ways to implement such styles of communication and support.

The definition of this topic seems to be continually changing depending on when and who you are taking to. I would like to learn enough on the subject to create my own definition of CSCW.
One of my main interests in HCI is information overload. I believe this is one of the foremost problems in the workplace today as it greatly reduces employee productivity. From my initial impressions, CSCW could lead to a partial solution to this problem.
I look forward to the class.
Posted by: JH on March 14, 2007 5:26 PM | Permalink to CommentMy name is Cindy. This class was recommended to me. I am in the Communication and Media Technology program with RIT. I currently do the marketing for a social service agency especially in their adoption department. I hope to integrate what I learn during and after the class to help awareness of the agency' services.
Posted by: Cindy on March 14, 2007 6:46 PM | Permalink to CommentHello all. My name is Heidi--I am a Communication and Media Technologies graduate student.
Throughout the past academic year I have become increasingly interested in website usability. In fact, my thesis investigates user satisfaction with different websites. As more and more information is presented through websites, it becomes imperative that we make an effort to communicate effectively within this medium. As a Communication graduate student, the study of this is very interesting to me. CSCW and groupware present a variety of usability issues and the need to communicate effeciently and effectively to and from a lot of different people. It is my goal in this course to investigate how we use these technologies and how they can be improved.
Posted by: Heidi on March 15, 2007 4:51 PM | Permalink to CommentMy name is Janet and I am taking this course to fulfill a requirement in the MS IT program. I look forward to learning a lot about Groupware and collaborative work settings. My goal is to learn more to incorporate into solutions and usability. I work in teams and groups a lot so design and usability are important. My main concentration is HCI, Technology Management / Business Concepts and Interface Architecture. My research interests are in the smart technology, context sensing and usability areas. This is my last quarter before my thesis prep begins this summer. My background is I have 2 Bachelor Degrees: Computer Science – IS and Business Administration – Management & Marketing. I currently work in IT Security as a Vulnerability Assessment Analyst on a project that will end in May 2007.
Posted by: Janet on March 15, 2007 6:48 PM | Permalink to CommentHi, nice to meet all of you!
My name is Ken-Yu Chien. I am from Taiwan. This is my third quarter in RIT. I am a full time graduate student in MS/IT program.
I am taking this course for the concentration of inferface architecture that is one of my three concentrations. The other two are HCI and multimedia development. I hope that I can learn a lot of new concepts in computer support for cooperative work and groupware.
Since my academic background in Taiwan is master of business administration, I worked in HR department of a semiconductor company in Taiwan and had some experience of cooperating with the programmers to develop some information systems in the company. I understand that users opinions will be very important during the software develop process. For example, in the early days of developing the systems, every employee in the company was required to try to the system and reflect the problems and opinions every two weeks. Therefore, I know that developing a system for CSCW will be relative to HCI and interface architecture and I am interested in learning that!
This is my first online course, I hope that I can learn a lot in this course to help me understand more about CSCW and groupware!
Hello All,
My name is Jeremy and this is my last quarter here at RIT. I am doing my masters in SD&M with a concentration in HCI, which is where this class fits in. I own a small company which does sofware development and online marketing. Since it is a small company we have to do a lot of outsourcing, so I think this class will be useful in helping me explore new collaborative techniques.
Posted by: J.Hevery on March 17, 2007 2:21 PM | Permalink to CommentHi everyone! My name is Jessica Drake and it is my second to last quarter in the Communication and Media Technologies program. I chose to use this class as an elective for my graduate degree. Additionally, I am interested in how to use groupware in an organizational setting. In the future I would like to obtain a public relations position in a university or corporate setting where I hope to be able to apply techniques from this class in my professional career.
Posted by: Jessica on March 17, 2007 8:19 PM | Permalink to CommentI am taking this class as a technical elective in the program of Communication and Media Technologies. My interest for the class comes from my interest in technology and the belief that extensive knowledge of how technology (specifically the Internet) functions and what purpose it serves in our lives helps in living more quality lives. The class fits perfectly with some other electives I have been taking so far such as Internet Marketing and Electronic Community and Society. I believe understanding of CSCW and Groupware will help me in better understanding of social networking hence sharpening and focusing my graduate thesis topic.
Posted by: Zeljka on March 18, 2007 2:20 PM | Permalink to CommentI am taking this class for two reasons: I need the class for my concentration, and I am simply genuinely interested in these topics. At one time I considered taking the Learning and Knowledge Management Systems degree because of it's focus on helping people use computer mediation to exchange information and cooperate, but felt that I could tailor my courses more to my liking in this degree. I also began this degree with a focus on pure HCI issues but have slipped into a more practical development focus.
I am currently pursuing research into peripheral display systems coupled with alternative data visualization. This will form the basis of my Masters project. I hope to take some of the groupware concepts that I learn in this class and apply them to my work.

I'm taking this class to replace one of the LKMS classes that I took for undergraduate credit. I'm not really sure just what areas of research I'm interested in just yet. I hope to get a better understanding of CSCW and groupware from this class to help develop my interests.
Posted by: Tawnisha on March 18, 2007 3:31 PM | Permalink to CommentMy areas of interest are software development, Internet development, and I'm trying to get started in ubiquitous computing environments. One of my MSIT concentrations is HCI so this class fits in well with that. I'm looking to learn about groupware and how it may effect software, people, and networking.
Posted by: Dave on March 18, 2007 8:48 PM | Permalink to CommentHi my name is Marcelo. I am working towards my MS in IT with concentrations in Human-Computer Interaction and Application Development. I do not know too much about groupware, but as social networking websites and applications keep growing in popularity, it will beneficial for me to have to deeper understanding of this subject.
Posted by: mbajana on March 18, 2007 11:10 PM | Permalink to CommentSorry, I'm late. My name is Krystal and I'm in the LKMS Program. I dropped a class yesterday and I'm much happier taking this course instead. I have been focused primarily on individual learning thus far and look forward to studying collaborative learning and groupware. At the end of the quarter, I hope to add some diversity to my portfolio by incorporating this blog.

This is my final course of the HCI concentration. I chose the HCI concentration because think that HCI is an important, yet often neglected area of development. I feel that it is impossible to design effective and efficient systems for human consumption without considering HCI. I am looking forward to this quarter.
On a personal note I work for the Air Force Research Lab in Rome and I have a wife and three children.
